Reminder: Employers Must File Forms W-2 by Jan. 31

Deadline Also Applies to W-3 and Certain 1099-MISC Information Returns

The Internal Revenue Service is reminding employers of the January 31, 2018 deadline for filing 2017 Forms W-2 and W-3 with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The January 31st deadline also applies to certain Forms 1099-MISC reporting non-employee compensation, such as payments to independent contractors.

In addition, the January 31 deadline for employers to furnish copies of Forms W-2 and 1099-MISC to employees and independent contractors continues to apply.

Extensions of Time to File
Employers may request one 30-day extension to file Form W-2 by submitting a complete application on Form 8809Application for Extension of Time to File Information Returns. The IRS will only grant the extension in extraordinary circumstances or catastrophe.
